What happens if you miss traffic court in Louisiana?

Consequences of missing your court date

We all have busy lives and if you are not careful it’s easy to miss a court date for your traffic ticket. What happens if you miss traffic court in Louisiana? Traffic tickets are usually very minor infractions but if ignored they almost always turn into much bigger problems.

The first thing that will happen after you miss your court date is that the judge will issue an attachment for your arrest. This is called a bench warrant. Once the judge issues the attachment you could be pulled over for anything, anywhere, and when the officer runs your name he will see that you have an active attachment for your arrest. There is a very good chance you will be arrested to answer for that attachment.

That is why as soon as you realize you have missed court you should contact a Louisiana traffic lawyer to help you resolve the issue before it gets out of hand.

The next thing that will happen is that you will be found in contempt of court. That means the court will add on addition fees for not showing up. This can get very costly for people that have missed their court date for long periods of time. The court keeps adding the fees until the citation is resolved.

Finally, your drivers license will be suspended. Yes, the court will send notice to the DMV and a hold or suspension will be put on your drivers license. That means when it comes time to renew your license you will not be able to and the DMV will of course require you to pay a reinstatement fee after you have resolved your tickets in order to get your license back.

To recap, you can see that things only get worse when you miss your court date:

  • The judge will issue an attachment for your arrest
  • You will be found in contempt of court and charged additional fees for missing court.
  • Your drivers license will be suspended.
